Medication management

Medication management is an essential component of chronic pain management, as medications can play an important role in reducing pain and improving the quality of life for individuals with chronic pain. However, the use of medications in chronic pain management should always be done thoughtfully and carefully, as there are risks associated with their use, including side effects, tolerance, dependence, and addiction.

Effective medication management in chronic pain involves the following:

  1. Comprehensive assessment: A thorough assessment is essential to determine the underlying causes and contributing factors of pain. This can help identify appropriate medications and non-pharmacological interventions for the patient.
  2. Individualized treatment plan: An individualised treatment plan should be developed for each patient, considering their unique needs, medical history, and goals. This should include a comprehensive review of current medications and any potential interactions or contraindications.
  3. Evidence-based practice: Medications should be prescribed based on evidence-based practice, considering the most up-to-date clinical guidelines and research.
  4. Monitoring and follow-up: Patients should be closely monitored for any adverse effects or signs of dependence, and follow-up appointments should be scheduled regularly to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
  5. Multidisciplinary approach: Medication management should be part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological counselling, and other treatments as needed.

Our Specialist will give the medication advice, and it’s ideal to go back to your GP for the prescription, as it helps in better titration and monitoring for any possible side effects.   Your GP will continue to manage your pain medications and ongoing prescriptions. You should review the ongoing need for your medications every 6-12 months.  With some anitneuropatihcs, achieving a maximal effect may take several weeks. If improvement is satisfactory, continue treatment and gradually reduce the dose over time if the improvement is sustained.
